March 8    6-8pm  Discussion of changing format of seminar.  Unresolved, so we'll keep meeting weekly. Art Action Committees were formed for several events in the next few months. Chris Brune modeled how to speak up for the arts as good business and great learning!  He referred to Daniel Pink's work. John Cimino invited group to consider arts events for 9th and 10th anniversaries of 9-11.  "What is the response nine and ten years after?" Re-building?, Re-Shaping? What role can arts and artists play in contributing to this positive remembrance of this event. Dan mentioned that grief, shock and mourning turned to vengence and war.  Can arts soften that legacy?  Several environmental installation projects were suggested: a "Wailing Wall", a wall where people can insert, leave their memories, concerns hopes; 9-11 "Table Tops" to invite people to sit down together and talk, visit or just be together...

February 22    Taking Arts to the Marketplace  discussion of current strategies of getting arts funded.  Dan introduced 3 ways to think for funding: 1. Follow the Buzz: "enviromental literacy" or sustainability or "No Child Left Inside; 2. Follow the Needs: who's in pain, who needs help, who's looking for what gratifications?  3. Follow the Partners: what groups or organizations are looking for the kind of programming or bump we can provide.  We discussed the partnering of Museum Village with Courtni's Center.  We all agreed that short written profiles of ourselves, our passions and artistic strengths will be helpful.  John Cimino shared his considerable experience as a teaching artist and a founding force in the teaching artist tradition.  The group seemed to split between those very interested in arts within the educational institution and those who realised their passion for art-making and art-doing is firmly outside that institution.  John offered to review written descriptions prepared by artists interested in preparing promotional materials and marketing materials.  Janet Fatta channeled the interests of the PTAs who hire artists.  Liz Reese again offered all the chance to participate in the Summer Arts Festival as a way to refine and perfect arts workshops.  We discussed Ron Gee's signature workshop with Qi Gong/Brush Work as a good example of a clear, unique arts experience to market.

Courtnie Hale offered to do a group silk painting workshop, and then as the evening went on felt that an Introduction to Rituals might be more appropriate.

Laurie was with her dying father, John, who was our guest in early January.

7:30-9 Ron Gee introduced Chinese Brush Painting-- weaving it deftly into his history, the relationship to Tai Chi and Chinese calligraphy.  He explained and demonstrated The Four Treasures: the brushes, the ink, the inkstone and the paper. The evening ended with a high energy group project. He is a charming and capable exemplar of how the Spirit moves through the Body into the Hand to the Brush and onto the Paper.

Description of Ron Gee's upcoming workshop at Warwick Middle School:

"Artist Ron Gee introduces students to traditional Chinese culture through the art of calligraphy and the unique movement exercise known as

taichi, also called taijiquan. The presentation begins with a discussion about the special qualities of the Chinese language. Using brush-and ink technique,

the origins of the Chinese writing system in pictorial images is explained, with particular attention given to the esthetic qualities of Chinese writing. The close relationship of calligraphy to Chinese painting and the role of the imagination will also be demonstrated through traditional subjects such as bamboo and fish. Students will be invited to participate in a series of simple Chinese exercises, followed by a performance of the tai-chi form emphasizing the slow, gently flowing movements that typify Chinese health practices. The presentation concludes dramatically, with the painting of a dragon executed with a mop-like brush on a large piece of paper secured to the floor."

Melanie Gold, a delightful mini-drama workshop: Zip-Zap-Zop, You!  And Tell a Story

Gene Bowen, co-founder Road Recovery.  In frank detail, Gene shared how the organization started and has evolved in 12 years.  A few notable comments:

·        Program is not about one-off, single events but about building relationships “It’s the power of we”. Start with and Individual, working in a Group, contributing to the Whole.  Many of youth involved have been in Foster Care System, many other treatment program and have experienced various levels of trauma. “The most important thing a mentor/teacher/artist can do is Just Keep Showing Up. The youth involved are so used to being abandoned”   It’s really  just “seeing” the youth.

·        It’s hard to get money, even from friends. Everybody wants to get something for their donation.  RR has to market the benefit of the program to the fundors.

·        One RR Stand alone program in NYC has youth meet twice a week (Mondays and Fridays) for three hours each night.  These youth are all in recovery and sober at leats 30 days, and under the care of a clinician.  Activities are music-arts-entertainment industry related and usually culminate in a short (max 10 minutes) performance with a headlining well-known music performer.  The Performance is for the fundors; all the heavy lifting has already happened during the process where the individual became part of a group and began experiencing a new drug-free youth-based culture. It’s Sober-New Friends-Interesting Environment. RR charges $800/month for this kind of program or about $100 session

January 4, 2010

For the next phase of meetings, we are going to try an altered format.  John has does an excellent job of convening and shaping us into a working group.  Now we are each going to facilitate the group in turns.    Moderator for the evening, Liz Reese, asked the questions:

Why are you here? What motivates you to come each Monday? What are your visions for how we proceed?

The two distinct directions that seemed to emerge from previous meetings were those that wanted to stay with the process of sharing work and ideas and seeing what organically emerges OR pushing the process along by beginning to define our purpose and goals beginning with writing a mission statement.

The strongest sentiment at the table was toward staying with an organic process, but not loosing a sense of intention and purpose. As Teri Mack put it: “Process that has content and context.”   Laurie acknowledged the need for wearing two hats, the artist and the organizer/fundraiser by saying “I need to move forward with intent to protect the place that I love to hang out in.”

Three significant (organic?) things took place at meetings end:

  1. A first committee was formed: those interested in attending (and creating?) the visit to Karen’s facility in January.  Discussing details is the first point of business next Monday. Perhaps a separate meeting can be scheduled if it appears it will take more time.
  2. Three to five speakers were identified to be invited to present to the group.  Gene Bowen, co-founder Road Recovery, who runs the program Linda and Glen work for, will speak next week. Pat Quinn will come back for two sessions, January 18 and February 8.  Hilary Chapin from the Big Apple Circus can come in late Feb or early March when she returns from Europe.
  3. Identifying the group as a place to share artistic/teaching work, bring program ideas, use as a resource for projects and learn affective ways to work with various populations.

In addition, Dan discussed 3 emerging grant possibilities.

Dan then led us (let us) in making “artist trading cards (ATCs) ”.  After the initial buzzing about, the room settled into the quiet murmurings of focus and play.

IDEA that emerged for me: After ‘trading them’ at the end, I at first brought them home and stuck them on my fridge.  But I quickly realized, in the spirit of the group, that they don’t belong there. (well, maybe one does.)  I put them back in my knapsack and I’ll see, in the next week, where they end up. (bus stops? office waiting rooms?)   I’m giving away my art collection!!

Here are some other comments by participants:

·      I’d like to see the visions we have become an entity that we can be that then supplies arts to health care facilities.    here to learn     inspired

·      happy with high caliber of discussions      I see us as creating happenings      compelling engagements     want more workshops      How can I help

·      loose plans: then something marvelous happens    don’t worry about product   safe and welcoming group      provides a sense of belonging    building relationships is key

·      connecting is most essential      wants to identify need and then make it happen    project -oriented person      motivated to act on perceived needs

·      double helix: group process vs. practical goals: can we serve both?      searching for a new identity/asking ‘how can I help?”

·      Art heals!      Art saves lives/nature heals     looking for work      using art to build relationships.     How can I help?    I see us as creating happenings

·      I’ve made all the objects I care to. now I want to experiment with relationships     art can awaken people    where are places to manifest our ideas

·      it’s been a process of compelling engagements   Lets move art to where people are     what does it mean to be human?     learning courage

·      inspiring to hear each other’s stories     after we launch ourselves from the group, come back together to compare notes     how can I help?

·      what we have to teach is valuable: giving people in crisis a sense of control by making choices in the moment of creating something

December 7, 2009

6-9 pm  Pot Luck Food  Discussion/Planning of next set of meetings:   Every Monday night starting January 4th

What Skills ("protocols") do we want to Develop and Practice?  There seemed to be two positions in the group:

One, it's helpful to create a mission statement and focus; the Other was that it's too early tyo be so focussed and we need more time just to be together.  This may be related to that classic duality of The Lumpers and The Splitters: There are the people who see and celebrate the similariries between people and there are those who can see and distinguish how everybody is different Some of us wanted to see what we had in common to form a service or business; others just wanted to come each week and share and see where it all goes...    Here are John's notes from this meeting:
Capturing Our Intention and Sense of Mission (our exploratory group process)

The Arts as a Catalyst for Healing and Health Building ego-strength and self esteem, uplifting the person

Providing personal validation and self knowledge via ownership of self-created art work

The arts as an alternative to the tools of self destruction Aimed at both individual and communities

Art experiences which express and clarify relationships and inter-relationships

Art experiences which open possibilities and create options

Arts experiences which inmmerse us in Narture or enhance man-made environments with beauty and aesthetics

Arts experiences which help us to feel again, re-opening hearts and minds

An open forum for creativity, having no ulterior agenda, but an invitation to participate in artistic processes

A purposeful sharing of insight, experience and know-how in the arts to be used as a catalyst...     Working toward our mission statement (a first approximation)

Developed the "elevator speech" or short shared statement of intention:
"A purposeful sharing of insights, experience and know-how in the arts as a catalyst for health, healing and self-knowledge... serving individuals, institutions and community groups".

11/19/09  Webinar on arts and society

11/16.09

6-10pm.   Seventeen of us were locked out of our expected meeting room and quickly had a local theater or someone’s home to go to. Ingenuity prevailed and we met in a nearby small conference room.  The food was plentiful and delicious. Most memorable was a fresh home-grown (in November!) garden salad from Gar and Ron and a moist apple cake from Molly.

Dan made a pitch for all involved to begin to make the case for understanding arts and art making as a central feature of human life.  It is not a luxury, a recreation or an option. Ron mentioned Winston Churchill who actually proposed an increase in the British arts budget at the height of World War II. When challenged, he reportedly said, "I do it to remind us what we are fighting for."  References for information A   B   C

Tim described the several old WPA style abandoned camps in the 110 k acre Harriman State Park as possible places for arts and nature-based activities

Richard Louv’s The Last Child in the Woods was passed around.  The Children and Nature Network has formed around this idea. Perhaps an HV regional version?

Exercise:  "Show a personal (art) objects and say it’s importance and meaning to you":

Dan:  old bar of Sweetheart soap links to Grandmother in 1950s via reptile brain

Laurie:  tinfoil dog: spirit animal/outsider art, from her friend Margaret Bodell

Rob:  miniature, multiple origami… all given away freely

Linda:  the marvel of discovering marble jewelry making! She Dances and Makes!

Gar:  searching for Place: finding walnut dye/fiber/earth; rejecting airy Western painting

Ron:  “Imagine the Chinese calligrapher: one movement: three rocks: we are awakened”

Dottie:  Always carry (sharp) pencils: the music muse needs them!

Molly:  “not many objects, lots of windows”. Heavy Buddha head fits into palm

Glenn:  Mali-bead talisman/Dogon twin orbs:“we have make rituals to create meaning”

Janet: modest creek stones: one gets returned; one gets adorned, given or sold

Mary:  adornments from family: wooden beads from parents/healing stones from in-law

11.09.09

6-9pm   Seligmann Homestead, the Orange County Citizens Foundation, White Oak Rd in Sugar Loaf. The pot-luck food was amazing... it included Laurie Seeman's Colonial Pumpkin Pie: custard baked inside a small pumpkin!  Skills and Exercises included selecting a quotation on arts and creativity that seemed to resonate as a way to present our selves to the group and a visual literacy exercise of choosing images that answered questions about the image of the artist in society and the image of the artist involved in healing and healthcare.  John mentioned Carol Pearson's work with the archetypes and a school in NYC where there is a Trickster-in-Residence.
